An argument on scot.politics has turned to the use of the word weegie and
its use as a derogatory word. I dont think it is. Whats the view - insulting
term or not?

I think its like the use of works such as "dyke"; "poof" and even "nigger"
seems to be ok for people within that particular group to say but can be
taken as derogatory from an outsider.

Also depends on how it is used. I always used it in a jokey way when I
worked in Glasgow and anyone I said it too knew that. I was surprised at
how many Glaswegians had not even heard of it.

I'd only ever heard of it as a term for a Norwegian Forest Cat until a few
weeks back. :)

That and a famous New York photo journalist.

The nickname was derived from his reputation for arriving at the scene
of gangland killings before the cops, leading some to jokingly speculate
he had contacts in the afterlife :P

Haven't we reclaimed it now? It's okay for a Glaswegian to call another
Glaswegian "weegie", and in doing so we've taken the power out of it.

"Yo weegie, you get your skinny ass over here and show a weegie some
respec'!"

No chance. I use it all the time.
